Volunteers Plant 300 Trees on National Tree Day! (2025)

Creating a new forest on National Tree Day!

Hastings Landcare and local landholders hosted more than 20 volunteers on National Tree Day. Together we planted over 300 native trees to restore habitat, increase biodiversity and create a wildlife corridor.

The site, once a cleared paddock, is now on its way to becoming a thriving forest and vital wildlife corridor. Hastings Landcare representative Stephen Allwood says, ‘We recommended the landholders leave the land and see what natural grows first. The ground cover was dominated by beautiful kangaroo grass, and we could see evidence that new trees were germinating naturally.” For the past two years the land has been left to regenerate naturally, and many native species have germinated and grown. The National Tree Day planting was aimed at filling gaps where natural regeneration has not occurred.

Private landholders have a unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by enhancing the condition of their land through the regeneration of native bushland. On National Tree Day Landcare Volunteers made a big impact by planting trees and increasing the diversity of plant species. Furthermore, allowing the land regenerate initially has seen well over 1000 trees establish naturally! Latest NSW land clearing data shows over 66 thousand hectares of native vegetation was cleared in NSW in 2023. Landcare has an important role in protecting and restoring our bushland.

Volunteers helped fill the gaps in the paddock by planting over 300 trees including a carefully selected mix of native species, including Grey Gum, Brush Box, Tallowwood, Wattles, and Forest Oak. The new plantings and natural forest regeneration will enhance biodiversity and provide critical shelter and food for local wildlife in years to come.

At Hastings Landcare we support individuals, groups and organisations in their endeavours to protect and conserve the environment, farmland and natural resources in the Hastings Region If you would like support regenerating native bushland or would like to volunteer, please contact Hastings Landcare.
