Landholders Linking Koala Core Habitat (2024)

Landholders connecting landscapes by planting wildlife corridors!

Private property is a vital source of habitat for koala and other wildlife. Private property can include many hectare of bushland, wetlands, dams and other water sources, frontage to river systems, perennial pastures and wildlife corridors. These elements add to the overall biodiversity value of a landscape and region. Many landholders see the value of biodiversity and add to and improve it.

With support of Hasting Landcare several landholders have improved their properties by establishing koala wildlife corridors. Planting out a wildlife corridor has many benefits. For wildlife, a corridor can help to link core habitats, create habitat, provide a food source and create shelter. Other benefits for creating a corridor include creating privacy, slowing water shed, shade and shelter for sock, providing a wind break and aesthetics.

Many landholders become very passionate about establishing wildlife corridors and become more so as they see it grow and the advantages that it provides. One of our landholders says, “it is really rewarding to see the trees growing well and the birds and wildlife move in!”. Even planting a small area can greatly boost the biodiversity of an area.

This project received grant funding from the Australian Government. If you would like support in planning and creating a corridor on your property including where to put one, what trees to plant, tree guard or would like support with other aspects of your property please don’t hesitate to contact us.
